UFCW INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT JOINS MEXICAN CONSUL GENERAL TO LAUNCH CELBRATION OF LABOR RIGHTS WEEK
Local 881 UFCW Partners with Mexican Consulate in Chicago to Offer Innovative Worker Rights Programming. United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) President Joe Hansen and the Mexican Consul General of Chicago, Manuel Rodriguez Arriaga, launched a series of educational programs and festivities for Semana de Derechos Laborales being held in conjunction with the celebration of Labor Day. Local 881 had a great reception and positive turn out. Local 881 also had a great response and coverage from media channels.

Se realizo la “Semana de los Derechos Laborales”
El Consulado Mexicano en Dallas y la Unión Internacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de Alimentos y del Comercio (UFCW Local 540) celebraron las festividades del Día del Trabajo con una semana de servicio a la comunidad inmígrate a través de talleres y seminarios relacionados con temas del trabajador.
“El Consulado de México abrió sus puertas para ayudar a su gente, y nosotros colaboramos en la organización y difusión de este gran evento donde 3,000 participantes se llevaron información práctica para poder ejercitar sus derechos como trabajadores en Texas” explico Johnny Rodríguez, el Vicepresidente Internacional de La UFCW y Presidente del Local 540 en Dallas. Adicionalmente el señor Rodríguez añadió que “La UFCW ha sido una unión de inmigrantes por más de 100 años y siempre luchara por aquellos que no tienen voz en el trabajo”.
In California 5 Mexican Consulates (San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento and Los Angeles) joined forces with UFCW to put together a National Labor Rights Week program. The events took place from August 30 - September 4, 2009. Twelve of the 50 Mexican Consulates across the U.S. participated. On Sunday opening ceremonies took place in Los Angeles, at the opening ceremony they had Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis as a guest speaker. Labor Day has a deeply rooted meaning to many hard working families. Labor Rights Week brings hope and a chance to inform many workers (documented or undocumented alike) of their rights as human beings and as workers. During Labor Rights Week many non-profit organizations, state governmental agencies, federal agencies, community groups and attorney law firms attend workshops to help inform workers of their rights and available resources they have.
